Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has expressed frustration over the U.S. Army's decision to rescind new academic standards for Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) cadets, which aimed to exclude applicants with low standardized test scores. The original proposal required SAT scores of at least 1000, with the average 2023 score being 1028. The policy, supported by Hegseth, was adopted on August 5 but withdrawn days later due to staffing and analysis needs. Critics argue the standards were necessary to ensure academic proficiency among future officers, citing concerns about cadets lacking basic writing and critical thinking skills. The reversal has sparked tensions between Hegseth and Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll, who reportedly did not approve the initial proposal. While the Army maintains it is evaluating changes, the decision has raised questions about the prioritization of academic rigor in military training. ROTC programs remain a key pathway for commissioning officers, with 40-70% of recent Army officers participating. Hegseth's push for stricter standards reflects broader efforts to enhance military professionalism, though the effectiveness of such measures remains under debate.
