The Mind-Body Problem Just Got Weirder
You're reading this right now. But who, or what, is the "you" doing the reading? We can map every neuron in your brain, trace every electrical signal, but nowhere in that physical data can we find the feeling of understanding these words. This is the Hard Problem of Consciousness, and it's the deepest and most fascinating mystery in all of science and philosophy. In this episode, we dive headfirst into the explanatory gap between your physical brain and your subjective inner world. Is your consciousness just an emergent property—a clever illusion that complex neuroscience creates? Or is there something more, a ghost in the machine that science can't touch, that explains your unique first-person perspective and the rich world of qualia (the redness of red, the sting of sadness)? We’ll explore the fierce debate: from scientists who believe it's a "non-problem" we'll eventually solve, to philosophers proposing mind-bending alternatives like dualism and panpsychism—the theory that the universe itself might be conscious. We’re tackling the very essence of self-awareness, personal identity, and what it means to be. Stick around until the very end, where we reveal a simple thought experiment about a bat that might completely shatter everything you thought you knew about your own mind. This isn't just a discussion; it's an exploration of you. Subscribe, share this with anyone who's ever stared at the ceiling at 3 AM wondering 'what is all this?', and join the ultimate conversation. Let's get curious together.

The mind body problem was invented by Descartes for political reasons: to save mathematical physics at the cost of delaying the development of cognitive science and scientific study of humanities. 5th section of Chapter 2 posted. gnowgi.substack.com/p/descartes-...

Now reading the new introduction (by Julia Tanney) to the great Gilbert Ryle's seminal work, The Concept of Mind (1949). Ryle (1900-1976) takes on the classical #MindBodyProblem in #ontology and #epistemology .

Solution to the Mind-Body Problem

If #stuff is understood not as a material but as a purely relational quality of a system, this offers the possibility of resolving the mind-body dualism.

Did you know René Descartes’ “Cartesianism” sparked the mind-body dualism debate? His *Meditations on First Philosophy* (1641) challenged conventional views, influencing thinkers like Spinoza and Locke. (Q379226) #MindBodyProblem #EarlyModernPhilosophy

Ever heard of supervenience? This philosophical concept unlocks why moral facts depend on natural ones, reshaping debates in ethics and metaphysics. Pioneered by thinkers like Donald Davidson, it challenges reductionism while bridging dualist divides. (Q202834) #Ethics #Metaphysics #MindBodyProblem

Ever felt torn between mind & body? Dualism, the ancient idea that reality splits into opposing forces (like spirit vs matter), sparked debates from Descartes to modern neuroscience. (Q167312) #MindBodyProblem #PhilosophyOfMind

Did you know "supervenience" reshapes modern debates about consciousness? Philosophers like Jaegwon Kim used it to argue that mental states depend on physical ones, sparking intense discussions in metaphysics. (Q202834) #MindBodyProblem #Metaphysics
