Key Highlights * 12 miners from the Silkyara Tunnel were awarded the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak for their daring rescue of trapped workers. * The ceremony, presided over by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, highlighted the critical role of courage and swift action in life‑saving missions. * The award, the pinnacle of the Jeevan Raksha Padak hierarchy, carries a ₹2 lakh monetary component and a formal medal. * The event underscored the collaborative effort of central ministries, state authorities, and the Prime Minister’s oversight in rescue operations. Detailed Insights In late 2023, a sudden collapse in the Silkyara Tunnel trapped dozens of miners. A coordinated rescue team, employing advanced techniques and sheer bravery, extricated the workers within 48 hours. The Jeevan Raksha Padak is divided into three tiers—Sarvottam, Uttam, and Jeevan Raksha Padak—each defined by the level of risk and promptness displayed during the rescue. Nomination for the award is conducted annually by states, union territories, and ministries. A dedicated committee reviews the cases within two years, after which the Prime Minister and President give final approval. Beyond individual recognition, the award signals a strengthening of safety culture across mining and other high‑risk industries. Key Concepts * Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak: The highest tier, conferred for extraordinary bravery under extreme danger. * Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak: Second tier, awarded for prompt and courageous rescue actions in hazardous conditions. * Jeevan Raksha Padak: Base tier, given for life‑saving acts that involve risk of serious injury. * Silkyara Tunnel: A mining tunnel where a collapse trapped workers, prompting a large‑scale rescue. * Nomination Committee: Body that reviews life‑saving acts and forwards recommendations to the Prime Minister and President.
