The Helsinki University just kinda let Linus tinker with rewriting Minix on the clock. I don't actually remember if they (the uni) didn't like Minix or if it was just... what they did.

Linus used Minix 1.5, the floppy images are all nonstandard, MINIX tries to figure out drive parameters by reading from the last sector of a disk. I've padded the first one using the truncate command and now it boots.
