I'm fascinated by open source software projects that silently run the world. Tcl/Tk is inside every Python runtime. A minix-derived OS is (was?) inside every Intel CPU. Sqlite is on nearly every device of a certain complexity. The majority of servers are Linux and BSD.

Back in 1992, the creator of the Minix OS, Andrew S. Tanenbaum, made a post claiming that Linux was obsolete and would soon die out: Linux was called 'obsolete' in 1992, and now it powers servers around the world buff.ly/8XygDwJ

In all the internet arguments you see every day on the internet, how many people have you seen become famous? It may seem strange that a digital fragment would go down in history, but a debate on a newsgroup website did just that. As early as 1992, Andrew S. Tanenbaum, the creator of the Minix operating system, published an article claiming that Linux was obsolete and would soon die.

OK, seems Minix is dead, and the comments I've just been reading on a post about that seem to indicate issues with scalability when using microkernels. So I had missed something. I'm not interested enough to dig any deeper into the benefits and negatives of either kernel option. Nice idea though.

I'd never heard of Minix before seeing this article. Think I'll have to check it out sometime.

Just read this article and now asking myself why don't most customer OS's use microkernels? Unless I'm mussing something this just makes sense. For the most part we have more processing power than we need so the overhead isn't important. www.linux-magazine.com/Online/News/...
