I was as a DOJ election monitor in Florida during the 2012 presidential election. As a Civil Rights Division trial attorney, I investigated police misconduct on the streets + prisons, etc. I was used to chilly resistance from cops.
Local election workers were tougher!

It's not great, but also, these folks are losers.
I wouldn't blow up DOJ's election monitoring for them. If they do something wrong, there is no one like a local election worker to deal with it. Absent that, acting like it's more than it is risks creating the intimidation they're seeking.
