While often thought to be strictly nocturnal, it is perfectly normal for raccoons to be active or snooze in the sun during the day, especially if they are avoiding ground-level threats like coyotes. This specific individual has mastered the art of wedging itself into a tree fork, using the branches like a natural hammock. The "Sploot" Position: Raccoons are known to spread out their large feet or "sploot" on branches, often napping for 30 to 90 minutes before shifting positions. They often climb high to sleep, as being high up means they aren't bothered by "mere terrestrials". While it looks like a miniature alien tank, this creature is actually a terrestrial crustacean, making it more closely related to crabs and lobsters than to insects. It sports exactly 14 legs. In this photo, they’re working overtime to navigate what looks like a treacherous mountain range (actually just some textured rock or dirt). Philoscia muscorum is sometimes called the "fast woodlouse" because it's significantly more active and quick than its "roly-poly" cousins that just curl into balls when they're nervous. Despite living on land, they still breathe through modified gills. This is why you always find them in damp places like under logs or rocks—they literally need moisture to breathe. They are nature's tiny trash compactors, spending their lives munching on decaying leaves and organic debris.
