Laws spent the best part of the entirety of one of his radio shows to engage in a misogynistic tirade against my wife for daring to be an expert in STV, MMP & Treaty Politics at Otago.

What a cunt of a human
Now can that creep Michael Laws be forever cast into the dustbin of history #nzpol

Labour saying the only way to change the government is by party voting Labour as if we haven't had MMP for THIRTY YEARS.

thank you MMP! 😍

Everyone who is surprised that MMP made another product announcement on a Wednesday, raise your hand!

>>>Businessman Harry Mowbray, who created a website encouraging vote-splitting, says the MMP electoral system is a "complete dog".

He confirmed part of his strategy was to discredit MMP and "show people how bad it is".<<<

What the F**K is it with these egotistical billionaires who think...(1)

And I kinda think that's exactly the idea of MMP.

For real tho, I think the current clusterfuck of MMP makes it incredibly clear we need preferential/transferrable voting for electorates by the next election. We need to be making our democracy more resilient to bad-faith manipulation by billionaires.

Delusional.

Seems to honestly think statements like this project strength & leadership.

But actually they convey weakness because it's a product of allowing the right to set the agenda.

We know in the MMP era govt policies are negotiated with others.

Expert in painting himself into a corner.

#BHN so the Leaders “Breakfast” this morning on ZB it’s evident that Hosking doesn’t understand MMP and Luxon is incapable of explaining why he wants people to vote for National

More tonight at 9pm

There have been both left populist and explicitly socialist parties on the ballot in the MMP era, neither faired particularly well. I don't think MMP is the problem so much as the destruction of the union movement in the 1990s that we haven't really recovered from

A small aside Opportunity is likely to cop a significant backlash if it defines largest party by the number of seats won not vote share, if overhang wildly impacts who wins (out of step with how NZ voted proportionately)

Q’s comment ‘ it’s in the rules’ (re overhang) does overlook the spirit of MMP

Yesterday we had a looooong convo with a guy at the market, and props to him he was very earnestly open minded - he was a NZer who'd spent the last 40~ years overseas and just returned

First question was about MMP and how the party vs electorate voted worked (what a great q! Thanks for asking!)

Looks like Harry Mowbray wants to get rid of MMP and move the term to four years.

... It makes me want to campaign for "super -MMP" and also to reduce the term to two months.

He's such a dick.

The Greens won the party vote in Wellington Central in 2023. And voter behaviour would change 9as it has under MMP)

Today's podcast looks at this weekend's NZ election with @overhang-aonz.bsky.social. The MMP system's ability to produce a proportional result is being tested, with National potentially winning a large swag of FPTP electorates but not enough of the list vote to justify that seat count.

OPINION: If Harry Mowbray’s grenade into the guts of democracy does work and voters split their votes, it will create a democratic crisis for MMP and its future.

It's not unusual for governments to roll out stuff like this reasonably late in their term. Pork barrelling & election bribes in general aren't new.

But doing it well after the House has risen and *a week before election day* is a level of brazen I honestly can't recall in the MMP era, at least.

1993 for me, because it was combined with the MMP referendum.
