A family of Tn7-like transposons evolved to target CRISPR repeats - Mobile DNA
Tn7 family transposons are mobile genetic elements known for precise target site selection, with some co-opting CRISPR-Cas systems for RNA-guided transposition. We identified a novel group of Tn7-like...

Key findings:

1️⃣ L1s drive large-scale rearrangements including translocations (not just insertions)

2️⃣ Frequency of these events was largely underestimated by short-reads

3️⃣ They occur EARLY, thus potentially acting as drivers

Very interesting preprint from @ksiudeja.bsky.social and colleagues using long-read ONT sequencing to find somatic ERV insertions in fly, which do not seem to accumulate with age. I appreciated the detailed and thoughtful text. 1/3

An endogenous retroviral element co-opts an upstream regulatory sequence to achieve somatic expression and mobility
Retrotransposons, multi-copy sequences that propagate via copy-and-paste mechanisms involving an RNA intermediate, occupy large portions of all eukaryotic genomes. A great majority of their manifold c...

“Jumping genes” helped ants in their evolutionary triumph after the extinction of the dinosaurs
A research team led by Dr Lukas Schrader from the University of Münster (Germany) shows that the evolution of ants received a boost thanks to the activity of mobile DNA elements.
