The settlement of Modoc is a small agricultural village and caravan rest stop near Vault City. Often hit by droughts, the town hoped to use a nearby abandoned farm to boost crop yields, only to find it owned by an underground nocturnal community known as the Slags.

They really are not, it's across the street from me. Northwestern edge of the Great Basin hits a southward spike of the Modoc Plateau into the Susanville area, where we sit and stare at the Cascades looming over us. Makes for fascinating flora.
