Dissolution of the Monastaries, but for Tech Companies
April 8, 2026 at 2:30 AM
I'm hearing a lot of farming, hobbying, art and a lot of hermetism.

I feel like we're about to invent monastaries.

I dreamt of humans getting together and writing hand written human content in secret internet gapped monastaries and selling it to the ai giants for huge sums of money as novel training sets to fund their cave cities

Dissolve the megachurches like Tudor monastaries

this reminds me of the incredible essay on etymolonline dot com about how one of the earliest motivations for the english to relearn how to read old english was having to decipher all the anglo-saxon-era land records after the dissolution of the monastaries
Incredible things happening with Indian cadastral records. Ah, you can't find out who owns what land b/c it's written in a now unused script. Beautiful.

Lagomorphs were common doodles & illustrations in the margins of illuminated manuscripts made vibrant with gold silver & other bright pigments. These books were written by hand (and copies made by hand) in the Middle Ages almost exclusively in the libraries of medieval monastaries. #2026MMM

Calling the Vikings professional is relying on some serious myth making. Easy to be great against unarmed monastaries and small coastal towns.
Thw Prussias is a weird and again more nuanced system. The role of education above all else. It also ignores the wider German states' role.

📢BRILLIANT NEW RESOURCE KLAXON📢

Wonderful to be there as Charlotte Gauthier [@faraiunvers.bsky.social], Edmund Wareham Wanitzek & Lyndal Roper launched their site - pop over to get a sense of the huge scale of destruction of monastaries and convents during the Peasants' War

Now live! We've created the most comprehensive map to-date of religious institutions in the German Peasants' War (1524-26), identifying many more affected institutions than existing source lists.

I mean, I was teaching on the dissolution of the monastaries yesterday and it may have come up

That's what churches, monastaries, temples, mosques, and synagogues are for. Keep the religious stuff in those please.

Meteroa Monastaries
Kalabaka, Greece

I figure we all have enough crazy shit going on, so just fun and lovely images today. Meteora means “suspended in the air” which aptly describes these rock top Greek Orthodox monasteries #meteroa #photography #greece #palatecleanser #breathe #ensuredsafety

For starters, being a scribe is a highly skilled profession, so there weren't a ton of them. Plus, they mostly worked out of monastaries and universities (and among the elite), all of which were controlled by the Crown/Church (they were basically the same entity so I'm just going to say the Crown).

imagine writing your posts in deep woodcut letters, aligned carefully on the press, stamping your words into the vellum and sending it to all the monastaries to let em know about your sandwich

Setting that aside for a moment, the program itself is delightful. They use abandoned structures as opportunities to drop some history knowledge. With Lindesfarne, for instance, I didn't know that when Henry VIII cut ties with the Catholic Church he took monastaries & executed the monks.

I know this absolutely not what I'm meant to take away from this but it did make me curious about how monasticism worked in America.

Where was it concentrated? What role did it play in the American Catholic church? How economically viable were they? (Medieval monastaries could be very rich)
Palantir CEO Alex Karp just paid a staggering $120 million for a 3,700-Acre Colorado monastery.

It's the most expensive residential property purchase in the area to date.

Karp reportedly owns 20 properties around the world, many in top skiing locations.

When King Henry VIII shut down the Monastaries he also said it was financial.

Me too, but I don't think it fits...he wasn't so much into rubbing elbows with the rich, famous, and degenerate as he was into living in Buddhist monastaries for years.

That's what I'm telling myself, anyway.

Sadly I could only manage a flying visit to #RenSoc25 but I saw a great range of excellent papers, taking me from attacks on monastaries in the Peasant's war, to rebellious forest of Dean miners, to the origin stories of elite families in Grand Ducal Florence.

Lovely to see so many familiar faces!

I'm wondering what the history of that looks like. Where in the past has that happened? Dissolution of the monastaries?

Before mechanization, before seafaring, the entire English economy lived and died by textile production. Henry VIII became one of the wealthiest monarchs ever at that time by the dissolution of the monastaries - which were so wealthy because they WERE the English textile industry.
I’m gonna say virtually all authors need to get serious about textiles. Who is weaving them? Out of what? Who’s turning them into clothes and how much does it cost and do you have any idea how HARD all of that was before modern mills
To write in the classic high fantasy mould, you need not be hung up on food specifically, but there must be SOME very mundane thing you're sincerely interested in and prepared to describe in excruciating detail every time it comes up. Clothing. Furniture. Architecture. It doesn't work without it.
