One monetarist versus twenty Keynesians

Its unlikely Simon Clarke has bad memories of the 1970s as he was born in 1984.

This helps to explain why he forgets a recession made worse by Thatcher driving interest rates up with her uneccessary monetarist policy.
The only thing that saved the tories was the Falklands war & North Sea oil.

Keynesianism, especially with Monetarist and New Keynesian updates, is a remarkably effective system.
it's funny you can see how much the New Deal fixed macroeconomic stability within the United States, and the elite hated FDR for it

Someone telling you they are a Friedman style monetarist in 2026 is about to tell you the dumbest theory of how something works that you have ever heard immediately after.

Irritating quotation from Seldon. Thatcher had a "clear and consistent plan", so the 79-81 crisis was fine.

Except her government performed a screeching U-Turn on its core economic (monetarist) policy, despite her rhetoric.

I don't expect most people to remember that, but I do expect historians.

Reminds me of a great line in William Waldegrave's memoir:

"[Edward] Heath would throw every backbencher request for an honour into the waste-paper basket, and another monetarist would be born."

As a monetarist: yikes! That’s how you get a nice fat full-blown depression.

comforting to know that in a world of chaotic change, Martin Wolf remains an unrepentant, deeply misguided, monetarist.

Send Milton Friedman back in time. Monetarist Rome.

The next generation of monetarist teens is forming before our eyes. Nature is awe-inspiring.
There are young people here but for _some reason_ they are all 17 year olds with an encyclopedic knowledge of state election results or international metro systems.

‘The very idea of helicoptering money to households in an economy with stubborn, above-target inflation, accelerating growth, a business investment boom, and a burgeoning government debt problem will rankle a central bank chair with clear monetarist leanings.’ www.reuters.com/commentary/r...

They say a Queensblade always comes from a line of Bozjan noble lineage.

But having an Ul'dahn Monetarist Princess as a wife makes me feel like a King.

In which your left-wing saviour voluntarily puts on the monetarist "fiscal rules" straitjacket that demands austerity measures and reduces the role of government to applying meaningless, performative nudges.
“Let me say this really clearly. I support the fiscal rules. There needs to be a plan to get debt down, but beyond that, we need to change politics and take the turbulence out of British politics because that is a cause of uncertainty that then has that impact in the market” - Andy Burnham

Haven't had time today to post on the RBNZ being idiot ghouls. Suffice to say it is bad. On the upside, these kind of macho, medieval monetarist moves do tend to bring down Governments.

After getting an absolute monetarist pounding in the WSJ, its nice to see a more balanced review of our Inflation book in Project Syndicate: www.project-syndicate.org/onpoint/why-...

A long read, and a good one.
Inflationary Tales
Jonathan Levy explains how economic shocks exposed flaws in monetarist orthodoxy and created room for intellectual innovation.

even if you're an idiot monetarist, it's possible to believe this: more balanced income distribution -> more dollars to high-MPC households -> faster velocity of circulations -> higher GDP, faster growth

Reeves is the worst. Fiscally in thrall to banks and capital. A supply side monetarist fundamentalist, A terrible performer, excruciating presenter and generally despised all round.

A lot of it was the absurd monetarist positions of Sir Keith Joseph.

I personally think it's quite funny that at core we are dancing around the fact that a lot of people who think they are socialists actually really like the core precepts of monetarist economics because their class status means they materially benefit from such policies
the above post, translated literally into simpler language, is "the objective of economic policy should be to stall inflation, not end unemployment" which is certainly a belief someone can hold and certainly understandable for someone who cannot imagine not having a job
