The river is a perfect spot for a sunny day, and this scene of Monnow Bridge in Monmouth looks like an ideal place to stroll around. Made in 1775 by Francis Grose FSA, this view from south side of the bridge, with Monnow river in foreground, is a pretty depiction of the town.

My best shot of a Hoverfly (Syrphus Ribesii) so far! Taken on the banks of the River Monnow, Monmouth, South Wales. 23/09/26. The Hoverfly is coming into a Cow Parsley (I think). Taken with a Nikon D500, Sigma 150-600mm at max zoom. 1250th at f8, ISO 3600 full manual mode. #ukinsects #hoverflies

1/4 We were in the Black Mountains at the weekend with my grandkids - age 4 & 7.
The River Monnow ran by the place where we stayed. While superficially beautiful, it's not a river that's in good shape at all - the bed is thickly-coated with algae - too much phosphate run-off.

In the early hours of this morning, following 119.6mm of rainfall in 12hrs, the River Monnow burst its banks and flooded Monmouth. The usual river level is just under 2m, this morning it was 6.63m- even higher than the record-breaking level during the floods in 2020 (6.57m). Absolutely devastating.
