To me, that highlights what's so monstrous about it -- these weren't a weird group of guys who randomly hated, like, Chex cereal. Their racism was so commonplace that for them it was as reflexive as saying "bless you" after a sneeze.

Disappointingly, all the teachers I hated turned out when challenged to be slightly broken but well-meaning people who’d been taught to be monstrous rather than empathetic by the culture of which they were a part. It was… weird.
