not at all, I'd say that a global phenomenon getting reduced to a regional one is still indicative of a terrible situation for indie games even if stuff like Akatsuki, la-mulana, yume nikki etc are all really good

🐿️learning a lot about autism was an interesting experience because it made us aware of how many people (including us) communicate in cryptic clues instead of just saying the thing, so it's been really helpful to be able to be like "wait oops I'm dropping hints like it's la mulana, let me be direct"

im ready to stand up and say la mulana has some great combat and at times feels like a real successor to the nes castlevanias
Which is wild, because if you look at them strictly as fights (imagine pitching them to a producer) they kinda suck, but the actual experience of piloting your chunky main character into the pixel perfect combat dance is so beautiful

Metroidvania based on Hell in La Mulana 2, where you start with a full suite of abilities/upgrades and have to give them up one by one to advance to deeper areas. Giving up double jumps, trivial traversal becoming tricky. By the end you're down to a pea shooter and 1/10th of your original HP

i think theres interesting real world stuff to pull from and also use for metaphor, and i still think the way la-mulana uses this is really cool. but the more i look into games like drowned god, the more i realize that lm is *uncharacteristically* good for historical fiction

People talk a big game about the la-mulana puzzles but I think the extremely specific, *slow,* platforming where one pixel makes all the difference was the genuine highlight of that game
