I pinched this mulefat 2 months after planting in fall. It will grow in fuller. I am glad to see it's recovering and will start leafing out.

This Gray Hairstreak was in a roadside flood basin with Heliotrope. Quite a few Lorquin’s Admirals today. They hang around the Oak trees, but what they really like is Willow or Mulefat. The creekside habitat here has all that. Happy little Woodland Skipper taking a drink. Might have been the Day of the California Sisters. I counted over a dozen today.

Yesterday’s #butterfly excursion was much more predictable. Been to Buena Vista Park many times at various times of year and I see the same things more or less each time. It’s a good thermometer of the health of northwest San Diego County.
Adelpha californica; the California Sister. A really attractive denizen of the riparian oaks that usually flies high but occasionally comes down to photographic levels for a visit. There are so many Sisters here that I’m tempted to call this place “The Convent”. Limenitis lorquini; the Lorquin’s Admiral is a Sister lookalike and also fond of the riparian habitat (though they prefer the Willows and Mulefat growing there. Between the Admirals, Sisters, and Mourning Cloaks, there’s usually a fight or two going on. Add in a marauding Tiger Swallowtail passing through and a tumble is guaranteed. Ochlodes sylvanoides; the Woodland Skipper is commonly seen on Goldenbush this time of year. Went to a spot with wild Milkweed to see if we had a Monarch in, but no. The only visitors were a couple of Pepsis wasps. These are also known as Tarantula Hawks. They’re generally good natured, but I still never press too close. Their sting is painful.

A patrolling Mylitta Crescent slips by at ankle level. Lorquins Admiral on Mulefat leaf, waiting for Swallowtails to drift by. Cabbage White has found Mustard! A female dotted Blue of some kind, with a slightly aberrant orange sheen on the dorsal wing surface. A little beat up.

Ringlet, checking out a cluster of unspecified deep yellow glowers. By behavior, I’m guessing female One of several Sylvan Hairstreaks, parked on or near the Planet Walk trail. These are all territorial males. My one shot of a Marine Blue male, flying around Coyote Brush. One of two or three Lorquin’s Admirals seen today, perched on Mulefat, as is typical for these males.

Once again, other fliers were around, but playing hard to get. Mourning Cloaks, Behr’s Metalmarks, and this young lady. Apparently a very shy Marine Blue female. #butterflies
