New: What does Canada's national security plan mean for rights, multilateralism and development?

"This focus on protecting Canadian strategic industries could lead to narrow, protectionist agendas that lock out or even harm developing countries"

As European Union and African Union officials meet tomorrow, much is at stake for people on both continents and worldwide.

It's a key moment for the AU and EU to respond to conflicts & crises and counter the rising global backlash against international justice & multilateralism.

Trump's the bombastic accelerator of a longer divergence driven by shifting power & priorities. Let’s not pretend it was all harmony before. The US has often gone unilateral against European interests (Smoot-Hawley, Suez, Vietnam, ICC, etc). For the US, multilateralism is a tool, not a principle.

How can Europe get there?

🛡️ Build credible European deterrence, turning defence spending into usable capabilities.

🤝 Pioneer a new form of multilateralism: leading a coalition of middle powers to shape rules on technology, critical minerals or supply chains. (4/5)

In a world of increasingly complex and interconnected challenges, global and regional institutions need to work hand in hand.

But multilateralism must also evolve. Our organisations need to reform and adapt if they are to remain effective, relevant and capable of delivering concrete results.

Malcolm Turnbull is right. At a time of global uncertainty, Australia should be opening markets and building partnerships. An EU trade deal would boost Australian exporters and strengthen our place in the world. https://ow.ly/58LQ5102GOo #auspol
‘Crazy’ Coalition making huge mistake by opposing EU trade deal: Turnbull
The former prime minister said middle powers such as Australia have to build partnerships with each other as the US was unlikely to “snap back” to multilateralism after the Trump era.

‘Former Liberal prime minister Malcolm Turnbull says the Coalition was “crazy” to oppose an EU free trade agreement and would be making a terrible mistake at a time when geopolitics compels Australia to build partnerships with countries other than the US.’
