multilateralism is woke and bad obv but we kinda need it to decide stuff like:

What time is it on the moon?

The one major thing that might change the overall situation would be a combination of both EU crisis *and* a generalised return to multilateralism.

After Black Hawk Down, critics called nation-building and "multilateralism" a Clinton-era invention, but George H. W. Bush had pushed nation-building after the Cold War. Samuel Helfont (@samuelhelfont.bsky.social) shows how 1990s debates reshaped Bush 41's legacy.

'The problems of multilateralism run far deeper than that. The liberal world order that the IMF and World Bank have presided over since the end of the second world war was dysfunctional long before Trump arrived in office.'

Just because multilateralism is on its knees does not mean we should give up on it. We risk forgetting where it comes from. It was ‘Never again’ to prevent genocides and atrocity crimes that led to the development of regional and international systems.

#Security is mostly in #military terms now, while #ODA fell by 23% in 2025. The #US, but also #Europe, including #Germany, have reduced their contributions to #development and #multilateralism, such as the #UN.

On Monday, we will discuss the implications for #peace and #security at #LMU!

I mentioned this in a thread this morning but in the context of world of regional oligopolies you can think of multilateralism as a mitigant against the gravity effect of regional rule imposition (ie gravity effect isn’t just geographic).

At the same time, you're right that things shifted dramatically under Trump. His administration traded multilateralism and listening for transactional, "America First" isolationism,

For sure!

🇨🇦 ♥️ 🇺🇦

Now and always.

I’d say 🇺🇸 too but only the Haley camp of the GOP still has Reagan values for multilateralism.

So 🇨🇦 ♥️ 🇺🇦

France and South Korea are taking their strategy of middle power hedging against the U.S. into the film industry.

But their bid for a “multilateralism for the moving image” faces real obstacles, @jhcansler.bsky.social writes.

The two countries are joining forces as a time of crisis for the entertainment sector. Their partnership faces numerous challenges.

There is no plan B: if we lose multilateralism, we will have no alternative in terms of decent relationship between states or support for our human rights as individuals.

This is the kind of question that leads first to the Moon being put on Cape Canaveral time and then to it being renamed Orb of America, by someone who thinks multilateralism is lame and woke.

In the theory of UN reform, the concept of merging regions into the global architecture or shifting toward a regional security model is known as "Multilateralism 2.0" or Networked Regional Governance.
