This is one of those things about the past that's a self-censoring fact because it makes you realize that teenage girls lived under the shadow of being married to (or worse, sexually taken advantage of, nominally 'consensually' or otherwise) men far older than them, who held them under their power.

😨When I watched DAVID COPPERFIELD (1935) a few weeks ago, one of the things that made it a hard watch for me was that Murdstone & his sister very much reminded me of those two, at least for how they both manipulated & steamrolled Clara Copperfield.
