It’s very weak and can’t cause you any harm, but it's there and i think it's really cool! We call that type of potassium potassium-40, or 40k for short. 40 is the mass number of the isotope and it’s different from the atomic number of an element you'd see on the periodic table; it’s just the sum of the protons and neutrons in an atom. In this case we have 19 protons, 19 being the atomic number of potassium, and 21 neutrons, so 40. This ratio is too uneven and the nucleus really hates that, so it becomes unstable. Neutrons by themselves are unstable to begin with unless they’re part of a stable nucleus, they tend to want to become protons and emit electrons in the decay process. So you can imagine, excess neutrons become protons, electrons are released, until things balance out in the atom and it tends to become a different element entirely. This is a type of beta decay, and in 40k this can take a half life of over 1.2 billion years as it releases bits of radiation in the meantime, and it’s why bananas are radioactive. There are multiple forms of beta decay as well, but I’m just using this as an example. Now, my powers let me directly control how the potassium in a banana decays. One type of beta decay that’s possible is beta plus decay, or positron emission, this just means I can generate antimatter in the form of positrons from bananas at will and it’s how my powers work when I want one of my bananas to explode! matter and antimatter annihilate when they meet, and this releases energy.
