#Museomics
A special guest in our collection! 🪲

We welcomed Dr Takao Ishikawa, Vice-Dean for Student Affairs at the Faculty of Biology UW (@wbuw.bsky.social).
We discussed how collections underpin reproducible research, enable museomics, and can help educate future biologists. #MIZPAS #Museomics #Biodiversity

Mainland populations are stable probably due to the high dispersal capabilities, but isolated populations on Gotland and the Arctic mountains show lower diversity and high differentiation.

This highlights the power of museomics for tracking real-time evolutionary dynamics in insects! 🐝✨

5/5 The study also highlights how much remains to be discovered—even among mammals we thought we knew well. 🔬🐈

Phylogenomics and museomics reveal five distinct species of tiger cats in South America
Lescroart, Nogales-Ascarrunz, et al. demonstrate that the contentious tiger cat species complex consists of five cryptic species. Based on analyses of 38 whole genomes from the Neotropical cat genus…

2/5 The new species was discovered by a team led by Eduardo Eizirik one of our keynote speakers from the Annual Meeting 2026.

They used phylogenomics and museomics to analyse genomes from living tiger cats together with DNA recovered from historical museum specimens.

Re: previous post: I am excited about the new cat. It is also important to acknowledge that the locals were aware of these cats and had already named them—which the authors acknowledge and credit in their paper describing Leopardus tilcayo:

New cat species in Bolivia. #NYTimes articles stated "The cat had been kept as a house pet for a year, before the family realized it was a wild animal, ill-suited for domestic life, and brought it to the sanctuary around 2017."

I'm curious about those pet details..
