“What’s up with your day, Meg?”
“Oh nothing much, just cleaning ENTIRELY wooden beater bars from around 250 years ago!!!!!”
Split reeds, held on edge between two long thin rails on either side, with linen thread wrapped to keep everything in place. This rocks.

Back to a bit of coin photography @romtoronto.bsky.social today's favourite is a Denarius of Nerva from 97 CE, mint of Rome. The reverse side has incredible detail of Concordia embodied as clasped hands, on a coin that measures but 27.9 mm! 🪙

In the next part of the process to make the Serce Liman pottery thin-sections the "excess" sample in its resin casing is cut off from the slide using a high precision saw (more in ALT).

Busy week at the ROM! I took the impregnated Serce Liman samples out of the cups, cut off the excess resin, ground the sample flat, then glued glass slides to the sample!

Day 22 of #Museum30 is on #Career. My career has had a few twists and turns, highs and lows over last 20 yrs. It really is true you can't predict where you will be and what you'll be doing. I feel very lucky and privileged to be back doing the museum work I love. #MuseumWork #HeritageSector

First Skype a Scientist session for Fall 2025 for me today so I've been thinking harder about #archaeology, #medieval, #museumwork and my place in the scheme of things.

You all have no idea how much I miss it and the people I've met along the way.

This White-crested Laughingthrush (Garrulax leucolophus) makes up the #BirdsOfTheDay, as I practiced registration system & procedures. I also concluded the reason the permanent marker did not work was NOT that it was out of ink...

1/🧵 This chap is evidently from the dervish frieze in our project on 17th century Iranian tiles. But the edges of the fragment were ground down and any one of them could be the edge of the original tile!

At one stage in the ROM project on 17th century Iranian tiles we had a frieze with monkeys & another with dervish, but then we found a tile that joined the two groups together!

(see my other #TileTuesday posts on the project)

These beautiful 17th century Iranian iris tiles are in the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, but my research with Lisa Golombek eventually reconstructed an entire frieze filled with peacocks.

1/🧵 For Tile Tuesday some fragments I had been working on for a project on 17th century tiles from Safavid Isfahan, Iran. 1st pic is from a sales catalogue; 2nd is in the Royal Ontario Museum (@romtoronto.bsky.social).

Museums are finally asking the question they should have asked a century ago: what do we actually owe the dead? New piece on mummies, repatriation, and the humanity behind the glass.

The traditional museum membership assumes belonging. Gen Z assumes value. Those are different relationships — and the institutions figuring that out are worth paying attention to.

Feeling disheartened working in a museum right now. The political climate makes it harder to find meaning in the work I do, especially when so much of our history is being questioned or disregarded. #MuseumWork #PoliticalClimate #FeelingDown

The staff is having an interesting debate on how to exhibit this as a 1960/70s “stop immigration” graffiti, unrelated to the factory, dramatically changes the history and nature of this object.

Confronting a subject long surrounded by taboo, this kaleidoscopic new exhibition invites visitors to engage with fresh, thought-provoking perspectives—reflecting on what psychedelics have meant across time and what they may come to represent in the future.
