Early #Greek #coins were made of solid silver (or gold) and were literally worth their weight in silver. Ancient Greeks would cut some coins with a chisel to check that they weren't fakes with a cheaper metal core disguised with silver plate.

Last weekend to catch the Etruscan show at the @legionofhonor.bsky.social and it’s worth the trip #SanFrancisco
Amphora with animal frieze Etruscan, ca. 625-550 BC Terracotta, bucchero Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Museum purchase, gift of Renée Dreyfus and Louise Chu through the Ancient Art Council in honor of George and Judy Marcus The signature pottery of the Etruscans, bucchero remains distinctive for its black surface. This amphora is unusual for its four decorative strapped handles and especially the incised animal frieze around its body. The parade of animals real and imaginary was inspired by the Near East, whose influence also reached Greece and its colonies, from which the Etruscans translated it into their own artistic language. Selecting some pottery for my student's test today. All this pottery has been shown by petrographic analysis to be made in Damascus, Syria, and is made in the late 12th-early 13th century, but the soil conditions led to very different preservation.

These beautiful 17th century Iranian iris tiles are in the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, but my research with Lisa Golombek eventually reconstructed an entire frieze filled with peacocks.

Busy week at the ROM! I took the impregnated Serce Liman samples out of the cups, cut off the excess resin, ground the sample flat, then glued glass slides to the sample!

In the next part of the process to make the Serce Liman pottery thin-sections the "excess" sample in its resin casing is cut off from the slide using a high precision saw (more in ALT).

The "excess" pottery in its resin casing is cut off from the slide using a high precision saw The slide is then numbered with the unique number of the object being sampled. "GW" stands for "Glass Wreck", the specific wreck found at Serce Liman (there were several others!) The slides are now ready to have the sample ground down to three microns thickness. The "surplus" pottery will then be renumbered, if the number was lost in the processing, and stored in the numbered bag it arrived in. If something goes wrong in the final stage, or if it is otherwise desirable, the block will be used to make another thin-section.

1/🧵 This chap is evidently from the dervish frieze in our project on 17th century Iranian tiles. But the edges of the fragment were ground down and any one of them could be the edge of the original tile!

At the ROM this week I set the pottery samples from Serce Liman in epoxy resin before making them into thin-sections. (more in ALT).

Pottery samples from Serce Liman in epoxy resin in anticipation of turning them into thin-sections. They are put under vacuum for a few minutes to suck the air out, and then the vacuum is released to impregnate the ceramic with the resin as much as possible, This makes it less problematic in making a thin-section out of the friable ceramic. I was nervous about mixing up the samples with their numbers, so I gave each sample it's own cup! Pottery samples from Serce Liman in epoxy resin in anticipation of turning them into thin-sections. Inky paw print on a sherd from Thebes, Egypt, recording Maieuris paid their taxes at around 94 CE. I've flipped the image so the paw print is facing up & the text is inverted. My guess is this was a cat, it's a cat kinda thing to do no? But I'm not an expert. 6.5x6.4cm
