Once carrying chant, now carrying contents: this liturgical #manuscript fragment is recycled as the cover of a small storage case. Just one of the many examples of the afterlives of medieval manuscripts!

Pleased to report that I have once more returned to #BookHistory Paradise, aka the Plantin-Moretus Museum. I saw some pages from musical liturgica in the workshop and became teary. I love this place (and its collections) so much. #MusicalBookHistory

Upstairs at the Plantin-Moretus Museum you can find an important piece of #BookHistory: a volume of Plantin’s Antiphonarium Romanum (1571-3). Hugely influential for #MusicalBookHistory and I wrote an entire article about its commissioning and production:

This fantastic book is also the first full gradual printed in the Italian peninsula! Fantastic to learn of another extant copy.

Professionally, it's also the book that ignited my love of early modern plainchant & music printing (cf my diss + articles from 2019 and 2020!)

Last BPL new acquisition of the year is a copy of the very rare gradual printed by Johann Emerich for Lucantonio Giunta in Venice in 1499. This is the largest book (by dimensions) printed during the 15th century and it required a custom-manufactured paper stock to print. 1/8
