The Panda Ant (Euspinolia militaris) is a species of wasp in the family Mutillidae. 🐼
Discovered in 1938 and inhabits the Chilean sclerophyll forests, its coloration serves as a warning to predators. They measure up to eight millimetres (0.31 in) in length.

Velvet ant thread! First, let’s start with what a velvet ant actually is! Despite having “ant” in their name they are actually wasps belonging to the family Mutillidae. The females are flightless, resembling large ants and are covered in bristles giving them a velvety appearance.

Here's maybe the poster child for Australian mutillids, a Bothriomutilla rugicollis female.
Many velvet-ants parasitize other aculeate wasps, so the heavy sculpturing might be defensive armor protecting her against potential host wasps. 🤘🏼

However, with 4,000+ spp., mutillids come in all shapes & sizes! The scale bar in the image is actually another velvet-ant, Lomachaeta hicksi.

A few moments of confusion while I try to run this small black wasp through the usual identification key. I realize I’m in the wrong family. It’s Mutillidae, velvet ants — a male Myrmosa atra. It’s usually the velvety wingless females I find. Rochester, back in June.
