Many of us cycle who struggle walking & our sticks are in the panniers out of sight. #CyclingEasierThanWalking #MyCycleMyMobilityAid

A great example of #MyCycleMyMobilityAid
One of my first tweets as bike mayor was about how my bike is my mobility aid. Some old crank replied that I can’t be disabled if I ride a bike. Anyway, I achieved peak mobility aid today when I transported my electric wheelchair on my e-trike so I could *finally* enjoy Halifax’s Public Gardens.

Once again for those in the back: People who can’t drive because of:
health conditions,
age (too young!),
finances (can’t afford a car),
space (nowhere to park),
environmental concerns,
etc
…. very often can cycle & need to cycle to make basic utility journeys!

#disability
Just seen a letter from what looks to be @tandemkate.bsky.social for @wheelsforwellbeing.org.uk in latest @cyclinguk.bsky.social magazine to remind people if you're medically disqualified from driving it doesn't necessarily mean you can't cycle & in fact could be your main form of transport. 👍👏👏👏👏

Making the case for including #Disabled people in #ActiveTravel #MyCycleMyMobilityAid
The vast majority of disabled people can cycle if they have the right equipment and somewhere to keep it. Hire cycle schemes make no provision for disabled people. #LabourWalksCycles25

Changed to an e-bike in March. With a muscle illness restricting my riding distance the bike isn’t cheating it’s enabling. Plus you can easily stop and take pictures like this.

This is so incredibly ridiculously exciting - Mobility aid laws are going to be reviewed and made fit for purpose!
Woo!
(& yes, I do think this is *that* exciting!)

Easy to miss, but important. At @wheelsforwellbeing.org.uk we've been working towards this moment for years - the DfT has publicly announced that it is looking at sorting out mobility aid laws. 🎉 Our #MyCycleMyMobilityAid campaign looks like it is paying off.

In case anyone is gonna come in and say they must be taking this spot from someone who needs it:

For part of 2024, I had a disabled parking permit. I was able to ride my bike, but I couldn't walk without pain.
This electric tricycle was spotted at Costco by my partner. Justifiably parked in one of the handicap accessible species.

And they say no one bikes to Costco!

If you ever want feel-good tears, go read the reviews of electric tricycles.

There are so many great stories and photos of people regaining mobility, reconnecting with their spouse/friends/family, and just having fun.

Actually, there are lots of ppl who cycle who can’t “just get off and push”. Not all identify as Disabled – there are many elderly cyclists in this category, too. But Equality Act 2010 applies in any case. Telling people to ‘get off and push’ is likely to fall foul of EA2010. #MyCycleMyMobilityAid
On today’s live blog:

“Access for disabled people isn’t a numbers game”: Conservative councillor slammed for asking why disabled cyclists can’t push their bikes during ‘no cycling’ row

Plus: 20mph zones don’t slow traffic, says Sadiq Khan; Chain trauma; CyclingMikey versus a lorry driver + more!
“Why can’t they use the roads?” Tory councillor questions why disabled cyclists can’t push their bikes and asks, “How common is this condition?” during ‘No Cycling’ row; 20mph limits don’t slow cars; ...
The temperatures are still rising, so get the factor 50 ready, crack the windows open, and join Ryan Mallon for another day chock-full of cycling news and views on the Wednesday live blog

If designed inclusively, cycling infrastructure offers independent mobility to those with physical impairments who are left behind by car dependence.

For many people housebound or reliant on others for transport, two—or three—wheeled travel isn’t just a form of movement, it’s a form of empowerment.

Police should not be confiscating #Disabled people’s necessary equipment. Isra’s story illustrates Met bad practice and the need to sort out the law around mobility aids. #MyCycleMyMobilityAid.

See our briefing on current, failing, #MobilityAids policy: wheelsforwellbeing.org.uk/briefing-on-...
'The Met Police confiscated my wheelchair for 19 days'
Israel Vidal's wheelchair was taken by police because it had an electric attachment.

We've been seeing a lot of assholes attack bike lanes and micromobility lately, and I just want to remind some people how deranged that actually is.

E-cycles are as much mobility aids to some #Disabled people as mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs are to others. Banning all eCycles is #discrimination against Disabled people. The unions should know better! Ban the dangerously modified ones, not all of them. #MyCycleMyMobilityAid.

Like you, my ebike is a mobility aid. Without it I am essentially housebound. I would really like to be able to use it without risk of further injury.

Lovely short thread on #CyclingEasierThanWalking #MyCycleMyMobilityAid & how #motonormativity local authorities prove themselves to be ableist when anti-cycling by being carcentric!! Lost count how many similar conversations I've had with others when parking up or leaving the cycle parking.
On Christmas Eve I popped into a small grocery store in my way to work. As I left I was behind a lady of retirement age who was walking slowly with a stick. She stopped at the bike next to mine. I looked over and smiled at her. She smiled back and said, “Bikes are great, aren’t they!”
