NEWS: President Yoon REMOVED - UNANIMOUS DECISION

In 2016, when Post reporter Jason Rezaian was freed after spending 1.5 years in Iranian prison, Jeff Bezos personally flew him back on his private plane. Bezos used it as a photo op.

Now, Bezos is leaving people he laid off overseas in a lurch.

BREAKING: The South Korean National Assembly could vote to revoke the martial law with a majority vote of its 300 lawmakers, and 190 lawmakers just voted to lift the martial law. Now the question is whether Yoon will actually lift it, as required by law.

Very chaotic right now, after Yoon's surprise declaration at nearly 11 p.m. Leaders of both parties going to the national assembly, though it's not clear who can exit or enter. Lots of police officers forming blockade outside the national assembly, according to live footage on air.

This photo circulating this morning as Yoon spoke for the 1st time since declaring martial law, with a wholehearted defense of his actions. The ajusshi-throwing-soju-bottle photo existed, and someone photoshopped Yoon in. Pretty much captures the mood here right now. (Reposting w/correct caption)

South Korea’s president stunned the nation by declaring “emergency martial law” — a risky power play that launched an extraordinary six hours of turmoil and evoked the military dictatorships that many believed had been consigned to history books.

Martial law, then a reversal: An astonishing six hours in South Korea
The political roller-coaster of President Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration then suspension of martial law was extreme even by the standards of South Korea.

By far my favorite part of South Korean elections: election night graphics. SBS television station kills it EVERY. TIME. They play these clips all night and they get more and more unhinged and creative as the night goes on.

The Pentagon is considering halting a planned expansion of U.S. Forces Japan in a move to save about $1.1 billion in costs related to personnel and command and control upgrades. Cancellation of USFJ expansion would amount to a major reversal of alliance integration.

There's going to be a South Korean miniseries about the strange, but at first charming folkways of the natives that then turned to savagery called Escape from America or something. bsky.app/profile/myhl...
South Korean officials press gaggle at the airport:
-there was 1 pregnant detainee, she was seated in first class
-none of the detainees displayed health problems, medical staff was in flight
-Korean govt exploring psychological support
-workers applauded out of relief when they took off from GA

And I was once again reminded that South Korea is a nation that fought for democracy just a generation ago, where memories of military dictatorship, Gwangju massacre, 12/12 and 5/18 are still fresh. And a night like this is a truly traumatic one reminiscent of a not-so-distant past. 7/7

It's wild right now.

From what I'm reading, 2.5 hours after the martial law declaration, the S Korean legislature just voted unanimously (190 of 190 present, of 300 total members) to overturn and end it. I've seen it on a small handful of posts so far. bsky.app/profile/myhl...
It took only ~2.5 hrs for the National Assembly to gather a majority of members (190 of 300) and generate a unanimous vote (190 of 190) to vote down the emergency martial law. The law says the president "shall comply" with parliament's vote, but doesn't specify a time frame.

BREAKING NEWS: The impeachment vote of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, following his shocking martial law decree that stunned the nation, has FAILED.

105 of 108 of his party's lawmakers boycotted the vote and the National Assembly didn't meet the threshold to pass the motion.
December 7, 2024 at 1:50 PM
That's not the impeachment vote, it's the first lady bill. Explained here bsky.app/profile/myhl...
They are first considering a bill to appoint a special counsel to investigate the first lady, which was the Speaker's effort to get conservative lawmakers to show up (cuz they will want to vote it down). Then they'll hold the impeachment vote (or conservatives might walk out).
