By early 1945 Japan had “lost” in a conventional sense. The Imperial Navy had effectively been destroyed, granting freedom of movement to Allied forces and permitting the invasions of Luzon, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Bombers were leveling Japan’s cities. 2/n

80 years ago - 21st Feb 1945, near Iwo Jima. Carrier USS Saratoga was attacked by Japanese aircraft and hit multiple times by both bombs and kamikazes. Damage was severe; 123 crew were killed and 192 injured, while 40 aircraft were lost. Saratoga was repaired, but saw no further combat service.
