The NY Times and other news outlets reported that GSFC decreased its workforce by 11%.

This figure is misleading; the actual reduction was significantly higher. Here are at least two reasons why:

NASA will finally have a 2026 budget and an administrator

but still not good news for Earth Sciences.

Despite the title of this article, I take issue with this "better" scenario. It may reflect the author’s bias.

The closure of the Goddard library is more than a logistics issue—it is an assault on knowledge itself.

NASA is the home of humanity’s most consequential expeditions, yet vandals are about to gut our accumulated archives under the guise of "reorganization".

Goddard library is scheduled to close starting Jan/2.

Many attempts in the past to do it have failed. This time feels very ominously real.

No replacement is planned.

Library personnel have been told to work on inventory and plan for a 90% disposal of the material.

Well, that was a bit unimpressive. There were too many general statements praising ingenuity and hard work, and invoking the past quests for which NASA is famous. It is hard to see how we can get back to any of that after the beating we’ve taken over the last 10 months.

Postcard from a NASA Earth scientist

I recently attended a university talk and left feeling surprisingly energized. It was the atmosphere: pure curiosity, student engagement, and "blue-sky" thinking.

It made me realize how much this is missing at work lately.

A long (and thoughtful) article on the future of Earth Observations by NASA and the role of commercial services.

There are no easy answers.

But one should start by laying out the problem and this article is a good start.

Personnel Facts about NASA Goddard Sciences

There are about 6,600 employees working for GSFC. This includes those located in Greenbelt (MD) and personnel at the smaller centers in Wallops (VA) and the (now virtual) GISS center in NYC.

There is a misconception that "Because you work at NASA, you will easily get a job after leaving"

I heard this over and over again when I say where I work.

Well, it is not like that at all, not in the case of scientists working in Earth Sciences (ES).

It’s been quiet these last seven days or so in Goddard, at least within my circle. Not much to report. In many ways, it’s a typical August lull—quiet hallways and a parking lot that empties quickly by 3–4 p.m., particularly when the weather is nice.
