The low risk paradox, 46% of mental health patients died by suicide yet the majority were classed as low risk, if we can provide good care for all patients, we can reach those people. Proximity to care in the acute system and drifting from community care are the twin challenges #NCISH2025

If we enacted an assertive outreach style mh service to people with severe mental illness who were 'non adherent' then the est reduction of suicides would be around 200 people (+ their families not being bereaved) that would make a huge difference. #NCISH2025

Powerful and strong with truth, Sangeeta Majahan describes the suicide of her son, and urges us to be rooted in compassion, to examine what care could be vs clinical treatment, nurturing adolescents, holding compassion for yourself.

26% of all suicide deaths in the UK are mental health patients, and that is likely to be an underestimate because not every person has been in contact with services to appear in this data. There was no rise in patient suicide deaths over covid (in 2021/2022.)

It's no surprise to me that 50% of patients dying by suicide are people given agreed leave, are back in the community, and 10% were off ward without agreement. There's no real constancy in discharge, imo.

When we look at the rate of suicides of mental health patients vs number of deaths, there has been a fall over the last decade which may be in part be because total patient numbers have risen, impacting the rates. Also care improvements. #NCISH2025
