“Everything is Everything” depicts Gabrielle, the eldest daughter of African American artist Clarence Heyward, who was about 10 when he painted her in 2022. She carries a small stack of books and “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” singer and rapper Lauryn Hill’s influential 1998 solo album. The painting takes its title from a song on that record, connecting a daughter growing up in the 2020s with music from her father’s generation. Gabrielle turns her face toward us while her body is shown in profile. Her dark black curls spread around her head, and a small hoop earring glints beside her cheek. She wears a white collared shirt above blue trousers. Her vivid green skin contrasts with a light blue backdrop on one side of the canvas and an intricate, gold-toned pattern on the other. She holds a stack of three books, edged in red, dark blue, and green while her left arm carries Hill’s album cover. Gabrielle’s steady gaze gives the portrait a sense of confidence without erasing her youth. Heyward’s choice of green evokes green-screen technology, which allows film and television producers to replace backgrounds and create new realities. For Heyward, it also raises questions about how media images shape perceptions of Black people. The leaf behind Gabrielle represents the world she already knows, while the pale blue suggests the world she has yet to encounter. The divided background places a child between experience and possibility. Born and raised in Brooklyn and now based in North Carolina, Heyward frequently paints family members to document everyday Black life beyond stereotypes and depictions of trauma. In this work, Hill’s music offers a bridge between father and daughter, inviting conversations about identity, independence, and growing into womanhood. The books suggest formal learning, while the record points to lessons carried through music. It is both a loving portrait of Gabrielle and a father’s reflection on the person she is becoming.
