🚲 Big win for Abingdon! £1.5m secured to fix the missing NCN5 link + boost walking & cycling

Plans include a new two-way contraflow on East St Helen St, Dutch entrance kerbs, continuous footways + better crossings

Have your say by 28 Oct – letstalk.oxfordshire.gov.uk/east-st-hele...

Ever since I found the NCN5 went from Reading to Anglesey, I have wanted to do this. And now it is done. Anyone planning Anglesey note the difference between NCN5 (blue arrow) & NCN8 (red).

Reckon that’s about half the distance done. For the next 4 days cycling I shall largely be riding the Lôn Las

Overslept today; needed to make ground. The NCN5. From Reading to Anglesey; every km is a place of Delight and Discovery

Pleased to see overwhelming opinion IN FAVOUR of the NCN5 cycle and walking improvements to our town centre, including contraflow lane

In Abingdon we don't mess around or sit on the fence

Excited for the only safe bike route to Oxford to soon be blocked for a couple of months by flooding, as happens every single year without fail! #bikesky

Well this morning seems as good a time as any to get out on ncn5 and the Cheshire cycleway to go grab a cuppa up in Delamere forest

Enjoyed a cycle into Brum’s Moor Street Station this morning along a new bit of cycle path to Cannon Hill Park - which I believe to be the latest addition to the ‘wonky’ NCN5. Thoughts 🤔
And I’m now on the Chiltern to Marylebone with @lauralaker.bsky.social ‘s brilliant Potholes and Pavements 🚲💚

Great question from Abingdon Lib Dem Councillor about the famous NCN Bollard which keeps disappearing (/4)

We have a bit of NCN5 here you can't legally cycle down - @nathanley.com is on the case

Love these new stencils all along National Cycle Route 5! It's great to be constantly reminded that cyclists are barely tolerated on one of the *only* non-main-road routes into Oxford, A Cycling City 🥰🫠

Is that the NCN5?

Penis stones on the NCN5

Both of us separately have a day a week where we cycle back from Oxford to Abingdon at around 10pm via the towpath and NCN5. Much prefer it then to the stress of it being filled with pedestrians in the daytime, frankly.

A snowy and sleety November Oxford NCN5 path

Beautiful pylons, River Thames, and Cowley branch line shown in the distance

Good to see siding out in progress (?) on the #NCN5 path between Sandford & #Oxford. Surprised just how wide the cleared path is, in the area south of the Southern bypass. Still some areas where it's narrow - Kennington footbridge woods. #OxfordshireCountyCouncil @sustrans.bsky.social

The idea in the first instance is to do the NCN5. Almost. Taken the first diversion. Coz it is nicer and shorter. Local knowledge and all that

A new cycle track? I did a local off-road circuit today. Went along the bridleway east of #HaddenHill golf course and found a bunch of guys and machines creating what looks like a new wide path on the alignment below. Looks like it could link #Didcot to NCN5, by-passing #LongWittenham.

It joins NCN5. @diminutivefox.bsky.social maybe passed by here recently!

A lifetime in a year; and a year in a moment.

What a year! Even in bike, alone. The big one being cycling the Caergybi via the NCN5; something I’d wanted to do for years and a life defining experience. And getting bitten by a snake

I made a detailed explainer video (with Q&A) for the proposed new junction in Abingdon to prioritise walking, cycling, wheeling, and generally make it a more pleasant town centre

It won't work on the hardcore antis but I couldn't bear the lies going around!

What do you think should be done?

Scrap the project, perhaps.

I'd like to see lighting install along a few, existing key routes, like NCN5 out past Kennington.

Yesterday I biked from Abingdon to the Earth Trust at Wittenham Clumps and it was lovely off-road NCN5, 60mph road, town, 60mph road, lovely off-road NCN5, dirt track, 60mph road...
