#NECEC
Huge good news: as documented by Ben Storrow of @eenews.bsky.social, the NECEC transmission line was activated around 1 PM today & is feeding power from Quebec to the #NewEngland grid!

This means lower emissions and lower prices, and we can already see the latter./1

Okay but it’s f**king freezing and we just turned on the NECEC which is providing 1+ GW of power so I would really like to not lose that power or, you know, double the price.

Avangrid sues Nextera about its NECEC transmission line project, claiming "NextEra has committed anticompetitive, unfair, and deceptive business practices to foreclose competition for the supply of wholesale electricity on the ISO-New England marketplace."

Combined output of Natural Gas plants in New England ~ 11 p.m. equaled ~5 GW.

It would have be 8 GW but for Wind contributing ~1.9 GW and Québec Hydro delivering 1.1 GW via NECEC transmission line.

A clear demonstration of the effect state policies are having on New England’s bulk power system.

Update: zero flow on NECEC leading up to the evening peak! 😅😂

As professional foresters, we're astonished by the commercial forestry proposed for more than 80% of the conservation area.

Despite all the noise, construction work on the 2 DC powerlines from Quebec to NYC and New England is going apace. The 2 segments should be ready by December 15, 2025 for NECEC and May 29, 2026 for CHPE. 🔌💡

Just a reminder that your power in New England could be cheaper if it were not for NIMBYs. (Maine has negative energy rates right now, caused by transmission congestion preventing more lower-cost, cheaper energy from making it further south.)

"NextEra’s repetitive advancing of baseless objections and arguments...created substantial delays and expenses for the project. Each week that NextEra’s sham petitioning delayed NECEC meant NextEra could reap millions in unearned monopoly profits, ultimately totaling hundreds of millions of dollars"

"Final testing of the CMP corridor is on track to be completed by mid-December, said Jon Breed, a spokesperson for Avangrid, after which the system can start delivering power."

Agreed with the professor - completion of the 1.2 GW NECEC transmission line is tremendously good news for #NewEngland. /1

…production (behind-the-meter (BTM) solar production reached ~6.8 GW); the New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC) transmission line was delivering ~1.1 GW of Canadian hydropower; and the region’s nuclear units were contributing 3.3 GW.

Midday, the sum of BTM solar, NECEC, and nuclear output…
May 18, 2026 at 1:34 PM
4/20/25 had about 1000 MW of nuclear shut down for refueling, so that would have been replaced by the NECEC.

If we get a mild, windy, sunny Sunday this year, with nuclear and NECEC online and more solar and wind in the mix, there are going to be some mighty low prices.

Cold snap reality check: Hydro-Québec briefly cut exports to New England during peak winter demand to protect its own grid. That’s winter peaking politics and a reminder that imported power raises real capacity questions = energy deficits.

#Maine please reach out to your local reps and land trusts to express concern over NECEC conservation plan and learn more about how it can be corrected. Maine DEP is supposed to protect, not neglect or attack.

*New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC) transmission line
*1.2 GW of Canadian hydroelectricity
*Competing utility - Nextera - funded referendum that voted against line
*jury ruled in 2023 that developers had a constitutional right to proceed
*Final testing to be completed by mid-December

Anyway, NECEC and this are a Big Deal and would allow us to leverage a lot of offshore wind if the country wasn't run by nincompoops.

I've never thought of NECEC or any other transmission line primarily in terms of "how many electrons will it deliver?"

The main benefit of transmission to the #energytransition is flexibility; the ability to move power when needed.

NECEC=useful by that metric.

Is New England’s new hydropower transmission line paying off?
The flow has been stop and go for the first few months, but the line shows plenty of potential to boost Massachusetts’ renewable energy supply.

very very curious if the tariffs touch energy in any way

we took a look when the early 2025 US tariffs were being announced and the white house seemed poised to tariff electricity

might be time to dust some of that off, picture has changed with CHPE and NECEC 🔌💡

Currently ISO-NE is importing 1100MW of power from HQ via the NECEC for $75 less than the LMP.

That saves ratepayers $82,500 per hour, or about $2 million per day. And that's all hydro which would instead be gas or oil.

(Does this actually work this way?)

the NECEC line was energized a few months ago. 15 yr timescales par for the course for large transmission interconnections 🥲
