what's frustrating is, the NECEC line was supposed to increase renewable imports from HydroQuebec. But their reservoirs' low levels have perversely caused exports through National Grid phase2 -> HQ to enable imports thru NECEC 😡. Not counting trade war & tariffs. A total mess

there is practically no new generation in the ISO-NE queue. Offshore wind is impractical- due to high costs, even if the administration weren't blocking it. It's hard to build ANYTHING. transmission blocks renewables- it was a huge push to build the NECEC line thru Maine- whose residents hate it

But if that's the case, surely it would make more sense to schedule the northbound flow on NECEC and net it out, rather than wasting a lot of energy on losses and screwing up prices with the congestion.

I asked Claude to help me assess how much electricity Canada is exporting to the US and it is a substantial amount. I asked how much was under long term contract and it is about 40-65% depending on how much hydro power is available.

The NECEC was supposed to be bidirectional: excess offshore wind to pump up water at off times while bringing in hydropower to supplement both base & peak. But HQ has essentially torn up the agreement and the offshore wind part has been kicked in the nuts - both due to the Trump admin’s actions

I think this is the first time I've seen NECEC importing the full 1200 MW. The contract with Massachusetts utilities is only for 1090ish, but there's headroom for HQ to sell additional power on the open market. Usually the ME–NH interface is too congested for that to be practical; not tonight.
