#NEOCP
(kudos to Sam Deen and Bill Gray for figuring out that the suspected asteroid CE1M9G2 on the NEOCP was actually Chandrayaan-3)

For any asteroid observers who have not heard about it already:

Newly-discovered #A11pl3Z is a candidate interstellar object.

There was a flash in the sky three hours ago, somewhere between Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea.

#IMPACT UPCOMING: a small (1-2 meter) #asteroid discovered by Catalina will #harmlessly impact in the western Pacific today, nominally around 16:26 UTC (4 Sept). Object CAQTDL2 on the NEOCP. Will cause bright fireball and maybe some stones splashing into the ocean.

For asteroid astronomers:

A new small potential impactor, #C43XT81, was just announced - cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/scout/#/obje...

If it impacts, that will be in 3.5 - 4.5 hours from this writing.

I assume that follow-up is already happening?

Very fast NEOCP object discovered by our MAPS survey in Chile and confirmed a few hours later by me from France :-)
The asteroid of 4-11 m approached Earth at 0.22 lunar distance (84000 km).

One minor critique, which is seen clearly in the NEOCP log. The first precovery observations that showed an interstellar orbit were submitted by Quanzhi Ye from the Zwicky Transient Facility (I41). Not S. Deen.

New impactor:

The small asteroid #C0WEPC5 will flash in the sky over eastern Siberia, near longitude 118.6º E and latitude 60.8º N, at 2024 December 3 16:22 UTC (two hours from this writing).

It's now known as 2026 RW1. The name hints at the discovery date: R means the first half of September. There must be something about early September. 2 years ago, 2024 RW1 also hit Southeast Asia over Luzon. Good news: Mt. Lemmon is past its monsoon shutdown. The NEOCP should get livelier again.

That's a work-in-progress that I'm writing. I want to know at any given time what asteroids can I see in my telescope. This program currently is capable of pulling in all asteroids, only neas, neocp objects (which are usually too dim for me), deep sky, Sun and Moon.

Based on the tracking names of similar objects, I'm pretty sure that this is like a captcha letter/number sequence generator occasionally producing something that looks like a word. cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/scout/#/

The elements have changed a bit since that original NEOCP plot was generated. You can make a new plot anytime here. In the "MPC #" box type 3I, then click "FROM MPC". Can change the view and save images.
