A bit more #astrophotography last night. Picked on a classic that has to be visited this time of year, the Orion Nebula. The little SV555 does a good job but the huge range of brightness makes it hard to process. Also had another look at Eta Carina with a filter that passes IR. Makes a difference.

The Orion Nebula, M42, NGC1976 taken from Perth, Western Australia. The little SV555 scope with its 243mm focal length captures this whole object with the impression that it is indeed 'floating in the sky'. Used short 15 second exposures to try to stop the core over exposing but I didn't quite manage it. Better than my previous attempts.

For those interested, I'm in a Bortle 4/5 area with the worst light pollution to the north where Orion is. The Pleiades is a difficult target for me. To the east and south are the darkest skies for me.

The Eta Carina Nebula, NGC3372, again! This time with a filter that passes IR, Ha and OIII. There is a lot of interesting IR in this. Still have not graduated to fancy processing to make the best use of it.
This very large feature sits in the constellation of Carina, the Keel (of a ship) and if you are somewhere dark its faintly visible to the unaided eye as a smudge. I've found it a bit hard to process because its so extravagant its hard to make it look 'natural' instead of some Biblical cataclysm.

Out for some #astrophotography last night. Was hoping the warm, dry weather had killed all the mozzies. No such luck. Paid another visit to NCG3372, the Eta Carina Nebula. It's a big sucker. Fills the frame at 250mm focal length.

This version I tried to process to be 'natural' looking. Its such an extravagant object it comes out looking over processed anyway.

This version I went a bit overboard to try to display the intricate structure. The different processing pushes the colour a bit. I'm not sure I like it as much as the 'restrained' version. Anyway, not bad for only an hour, but it is a very bright object. The challenge is to capture the wispy outer regions without over exposing the bright core.

New Instrument at SOAR Achieves First Light with Observations of Remarkable Binary Star System

SOAR 🔭 in Chile has been upgraded with SOAR 🔭 Echelle Spectrograph (STELES),which achieved first light Aug 2025 by observing the binary⭐system Eta Carinae among other targets

This image shows the giant star-forming region in the southern sky known as the Carina Nebula (NGC3372), and the full spectrum of the binary star system at its center — Eta Carinae. This spectrum was captured with the newly installed SOAR Telescope Echelle Spectrograph (STELES) on the SOAR Telescope. It measures light from around 312 nanometers to around 905 nanometers. Light that is ‘bluer’ than 380 nanometers is ultraviolet and is invisible to our eyes. Light that is ‘redder’ than around 750 nanometers is infrared and is also invisible to our eyes. The bright bands indicate the detection of specific wavelengths of light emitted by hydrogen.

Eta Carinae is a fascinating and faint pair of stars located in the constellation Carina, and is a prime example of the type of object that STELES will investigate. SOAR is located on Cerro Pachón in Chile and is operated by U.S. National Science Foundation Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), a Program of NSF NOIRLab.

¿Por que me hago esto de sufrir con tanta contaminación? Vaya uno a saber.
Casi en el centro se puede ver Carinae (ngc3372)
