Two telescopes, two epochs, the same nebula. You might have to stare for a little bit to fully appreciate all the movement going. Apologies to any faint stars who got deleted. I tried to remove the NICMOS PSFs from the Hubble view (which is lower resolution/blurrier)

This breathtaking image, taken by Hubble on 28 March 2004, shows a truly fascinating astronomical event: a rare triple eclipse on Jupiter due to an equally rare alignment of three of its largest moons– Io, Ganymede, Callisto – across the planet's face.

Hubble NICMOS image of Arp 220, also known as IC 4553.

This infrared image shows two compact star clusters in the center of Arp 220. They are the remnant cores of two spiral galaxies that are in the process of merging.

I am sad to let everyone in the astronomy community know that Glenn Schneider passed away yesterday. I've worked together with him closely in the past decade and learned a lot from him. He had a long career, culminating in various HST related projects. He was a lead scientist of the NICMOS project,

It seems to have the current generation of instruments included (even NICMOS!), so aberrations are corrected within each instrument. Didn't check primary and how spherical it is. @bmacastro.bsky.social

Changes in the south-polar hood were even clearer a year later, when Aug'1998 NICMOS observations of #Uranus showed the bright 'collar' of the hood (and amazing banding at lower latitudes, reminiscent of Jupiter's bands). 📸Karkoschka/NASA.
