My (now) weekly update on 2026 NIH funding.

New and competitive renewal awards.

3 new awards (compared to ~100 expected based on recent years).

No new ICs... still just NIA, NINDS, NIDCD, and NIDCR.

Ominous message on the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communicative Disorders (NIDCD) website:”Due to current HHS and NIH restructuring, the information provided on nidcd.nih.gov is not being updated and may not be available in the future. Please refer to nih.gov.”

Holly Storkel is still very reachable if it’s NIDCD

As someone who has benefited from:
* NIH/NIDCD Diversity Supplement
* @achems.bsky.social Diversity Travel Awards
* UCSF-IMSD Fellowship
* SFN NSP Fellowship
* MBL SPINES Fellowship

The events of this week are wildly disturbing.

New and Competitive renewals

These are still be made VERY slowly. Only 75 awards have been made through 1/23/26.

These are now from 7 institutes and centers (NIA (45), NINDS (16), NIDDK (5), NIDCR (4), NIDCD (2), NHLBI (1), and NCATS (1)).

Agree. NIDCD uses those for PD support. Organizations need to allow PDs to be PIs on these awards.

(3) The effects of the government shutdown.

Of the new and competitive renewal awards that have been made 34 were made by NIA (National Institute on Aging), 5 by NINDS (Neurology), 2 by NIDCD (Deafness), and 1 by NICDR (Dental).

I don't know the factors behind this distribution of institutes.

I’ve had an amazing time at #ARO2025. I’ve learned about all sorts of new and exciting things. But have also felt the absence of our amazing NIDCD colleagues, many of whom were supposed to present posters near me. Everyone benefits from scientists being able to share their work.

Check out our new work in JSLHR where we consider ethical issues in collection of daylong audio recordings in children with language delays and disabilities. This work was part of a bioethics supplement from NIDCD. @dmessinger.bsky.social
Using automated, digital data collection -- e.g., daylong audio recordings of children's language environments -- is yielding important insights for research in CSD. But ethical issues have yet to be thoroughly explored. This study does just that. on.asha.org/45hnjh5

question but also rant: What are we all thinking about the likelihood of federal funding orgs still exiting by July 15? Do I prep a grant revision just in case? NSF (PAC) or NIH (NIA/NIDCD/NICHD)?

The fact that they use NICHD and NIDCD to create the new National institute of Child and Women’s health says a lot about how they think about women—mere vessels for children? WTF.

just realized that I say "a NIDCD fellowship" but "an NINDS fellowship". Crazy that the third letter of the initialism subconsciously drives the article that feels right to use!
