#NIRSpec
Extremely distant galaxies, observed by JWST using NIRCam while its other instrument, NIRSpec, observed other targets.
The method of observing two targets at a time is called "pure parallel observation".

Now that there's a NIRSPEC on JWST, I vote we rename NIRSPEC on @keckobservatory.bsky.social to NIRKECK or NIRSECK

Comet 3I/ATLAS, the interstellar visitor that blew through our solar system, might have been a truly ancient relic.

A new analysis of its unusual composition suggests the comet could be up to 12 billion years old, dating from the earliest era of our galaxy. 🧪🔭

The NIRSpec instrument revealed exceptionally high levels of deuterium that suggest the comet may have originated in a very cold system much earlier in the history of our galaxy.

1. Reobserve K2-18b multiple times with the same instruments.

An independent JWST program will observe K2-18b four times (with the NIRSpec G395H instrument) from Jan-May 2024, and twice with another instrument (NIRSpec G235H).

This will produce a much more precise spectrum.

I am delighted to point you #PlanetaryScience fans to our latest paper, where we used JWST to study the largest low-albedo objects (dare I call them planetary embryos?) in the main asteroid belt.

Big thanks to @hbhammel.bsky.social for her years of leadership!

JWST has observed the exoplanet K2-18b transit on multiple occasions with different instruments.

The first JWST observations (with the NIRISS and NIRSpec instruments), found a clear detection of CH4 (5σ) and also reported CO2 (3σ) and DMS (1σ).
