#NPT’s
NPT's fate was sealed with the Budapest Memorandum followed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine 10 years later in 2014.

Everyone learned a lesson: you cannot count on the West's promises. If you give up nukes, (and all the rockets and planes Ukraine gave up), don't be surprised if you're invaded.
The centrifuges are getting turned on all over Europe. We will not see them extinguished in our lifetime.

An NPT nuclear-weapon state uses its atomic arms to deter foreign help for an NPT non-nuclear-weapon state that it is attacking & whose civilian nuclear installations it uses as weapons of mass destruction.

In 1994, Ukraine received explicit security assurances from the NPT's 3 depositary states.

Yes. The nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) is predicated on responsible behaviour from the states to which it granted nuclear monopoly. Furthermore, NPT demands progress in disarmament of nuclear arsenals.

There are *many* good reasons to challenge NPT's validity, even its basic premises.
Lawyer and former deputy head of the Central Election Commission Andrii Mahera commented on U.S. pressure on Ukraine regarding territorial concessions.

Iran has long framed the NPT as a tool of Western double standards, used to punish Iran while ignoring Israel’s undeclared arsenal. A direct Israeli strike would reinforce that view. And allow Iran to pander to states that are also discontent with the NPT’s double standards.

Russia has put the purpose of the non-proliferation regime on its head: The NPT’s permission of Russian possession of nuclear weapons has helped Moscow to conduct its expansionist and genocidal war against Ukraine.

Peter Goosen, the titan of arms control, has passed. Peter was an amazing man, a proud South African who left his mark on chemical, biological and nuclear arms control. However, he will be most famously known for his role in the NPT’s indefinite extension in 1995. (1/n)

i care a little because of the proliferation risk but tbh a lot of that is precrime. a lot of iran's woes actually arise from self-reporting under the npt's directed iaea framework. nobody's bombing india about *not* being a signatory.

5/ Likely workable proposals:
✅ Parallel US/Russia statements to keep New START caps.
✅ Increased transparency at nuclear test sites.
✅ Using interactive national reports to boost accountability.
✅ Doubling down on the NPT's "bright spot": the expansion of peaceful nuclear technology for development

Peter was deeply knowledgeable, but exceptionally devout to democratic process. There’s no better example than the NPT’s extension. Indefinite extension wasn’t his preferred option. But when the politicians decided to go for it, he made it work. True class. RIP

They remain among the most effective tools available to advance the NPT’s three pillars of disarmament, nonproliferation, and cooperation on the peaceful uses of nuclear technology.

Gutted to hear that this year's @nowplaythis.bsky.social festival will be the last, but it's been great.

I've always admired NPT's approach to curation & production, and the team are all amazing. I'm glad I was able to help out a little every now and then. 💜
