There is no denying Brereton advised the NACC leadership team, the AG, and the NSAP of his COI....on 3 July 2023 and 7 July 2023.

Classical learning theory describes a bias/variance tradeoff in which a model with enough parameters to memorize would fail to generalize. It took years to theoretically understand why that didn't happen. Conceptually they were in the start of the "double descent" curve.

It didn’t seem like it could be differentiable, so how would you learn it by GD? The key was word embeddings. It turns out there’s enough data to learn individual token representations for a large vocab.

this is roughly my impression. they have individually competent people making sure that the lights stay on, basically. they have very, very limited competence in other things. the only thing they have done that looks "clever" is figuring out how to scale RL that far bsky.app/profile/nsap...
My theory: His engineers are individually competent but the team as a whole has one specialization (compute scale) and nobody who specializes in data, HCI, or anything LM specific.

I can talk about neurobiology/the human brain/perception etc in animals. But I’m not a ML expert. Someone who is an expert is @nsaphra.bsky.social who wrote this thread about LLM reasoning that had several papers people asking you for compsci papers might be interested in.

Reasoning is about variable binding. It’s not about information retrieval. If a model cannot do variable binding, it is not good at grounded reasoning, and there’s evidence accruing that large scale can make LLMs worse at in-context grounded reasoning. 🧵
