#NSBP
What’s especially wild (legally) about this is that NSBP, NSHP, and SACNAS have always welcomed people of all backgrounds, including white people. NSHP has had a white president, my SACNAS leadership institute class has several white members, and NSBP has a sizable white membership.
Very bad: OSU unilaterally cancelled the registration of grad students attending the joint conference of the National Society of Black Physicists and the National Society of Hispanic Physicists. And OSU won't fund recruiting at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science.

Great article by @alexwitze.bsky.social on hurdles to attend SACNAS and NSBP/NSHP this year, with quotes from me & @astrojennifer.bsky.social: "even with all the barriers and uncertainties, people showed up, supported one another, and shared their science and stories with honesty and resilience". 👏
Following Trump's DEI cuts, attendance has plunged at some conferences for scientists from underrepresented groups. The loss of federal support means fewer chances for people to network, share science, and develop new career paths.

Still, attendees say "the sense of solidarity remains strong".

Federal funding has been cut for the NSBP annual conference. Travel awards support all students to attend, present, network, and learn at (IMO) the best national physics conference. This is a HUGE loss to the scientific community. ⚛️ 🔭

What's up, Charlottesville?

I'm on my way to you right now.

Looking forward to meeting the NSBP/Astro Club at 5 tomorrow.

Then running astro bar trivia at 7 at Selvidge Taphouse.

Then Friday at 3:30, giving the physics colloquium on JWST discoveries.

Come and enjoy! Don't miss it!

🙋🏼‍♀️ Raises hand as white person who has been (warmly!) welcomed at NSBP for many years.
Also from a state (Michigan) that has been operating under an “affirmative action ban” for almost two decades … so our lawyers know that it’s perfectly legal to attend these events
