#NSMBU
I'm not usually a 100% completipnist but Mario games are often really easy to 100%. Quite enjoyed going for 100% on 3D World, Wonder and NSMBU specifically TBH even tho my feelings on the latter isn't as highly as the other two.

And after this they really dont do that again. As much as nsmbu and 3d world are considered generic they have loads of new guys and new power ups and ideas.

Nsmb2 is like a unprocessed fully mandated mario media.

RTTP: I continue to really enjoy NSMBU, but there's one thing that's missing from it compared to other 2D Marios since SMW

counterpoint to the nsmbu haters: thats the peachette game so its actually the best mario game ever made

Originally, I wanted to make wendy a skater cuz of her association with ice skating in nsmbu. But after careful consideration, i turned her into a mermaid cuz she’s the pretty water girlie

New entry

This isn't "revisionism", I've never been particularly fond of Wonder. I played NSMBU as an adult and replayed it after Wonder – I prefer U.

11. NSMBU
The problem with the New series is that there are very few truly new ideas on hand, whereas we expect a new Mario game to be an innovative special event. The last of the New games is no exception, and while it is the most tightly executed, it's also nothing to write home about.

something i've never seen brought up on a broad scale, and probably because no one bothers to check these level files because of the skawo video that just visually describes every level;

in nsmbu-dx, there's a very peculiar unused level thats. quite similar to a certain wonder effect from smbw;

I haven't looked into things in years, last time I tried years ago I found nothing and ended up resorting to playing things over NSMBU + NSLU's bonus video player by swapping out the .mp4s in that game. obvs didn't do that a whole lot

Yeah, it was the mix of timing and also just how iterative these particular entries were.

- NSMBU was just more NSMBW with slightly changed visuals, in a year that ALREADY had NSMB2 on 3DS, which was visually identical to NSMBW.
-3D World is way better than 3D Land, but looks and plays very similar
Something a little less talked about with Wii U failure is how iterative and soon the major games were

Mario Wii - Mario U = 3 years
3D Land - 3D World = 2 years
Mario Kart 7 - Mario Kart 8 = 3 years
DK Returns - Tropical Freeze = 4 years

Most normal people were like "I already played this game"

The Wii U kept pushing for games like NSMBU, 3D World, Mario Kart, Smash Bros to be big sellers for the console, even bundling them. Which are great games, but for a lot of ppl it seemed fruitless if they could get similar enough experience elsewhere for cheaper with more unique titles
Been bingewatching Scott the Woz’s Wii U series before watching Part 3 and he raises a really great point as to why the Wii U exclusives weren’t really selling the console for ppl back in the day

NSMBU got casual fans complaining like Twitter Nintendo fanboys, actually abysmally timed game
September 13, 2026 at 6:48 AM
Hold on

What the FUCK do you mean NSMB Wii was only 3 years before NSMBU

Time has never been real

The other issue with e3 2013 was that the trailers for Tropical Freeze and 3D World were fairly dull and didn’t really demonstrate that these were much more ambitious games than their predecessors. People were thinking these would be moderate leaps like NSMBU from NSMBW.

Might go live with NSMBU after lab today, things have been getting really hard at home and I need a distraction. Should be around 3pm EDT?

Will be at my Twitch like usual. Sorry for the lack of streams lately.

people were really pissed about retro studios wasting their time with yet another 2d donkey kong game too, which is hilarious in hindsight

and i dont think i even have to talk about nsmbu

the only game here that people didn't hate on was mk8 because antigravity was cool
September 12, 2026 at 10:39 AM
bonus points for nsmbu coming out a couple months after nsmb2, leading to even more fatigue over very similar games
September 12, 2026 at 10:37 AM
this is funny but ever since i had that dream i've been thinking of different concepts on how nes mario maker could work

nsmbu could be replaced with lost levels and smb2 could be the "extra game style"

the rom would also use sram so you can save levels and replay them in a coursebot-like menu
i had this dream last night that someone made an nes version of mario maker that removed nsmbu and 3d world and replaced smw with the hummer team bootleg version but kept smb1 and smb3 the same and the level making system worked similar to wrecking crew's level editor

...potential nes romhack idea?
September 8, 2026 at 9:14 PM
NSMBU gets hopelessly mogged by Wonder in every way, especially when it comes to style/soul. The best thing the WiiU gave us was Splatoon but the sequels are a drastic improvement (still love the Squid Sisters though).

The WiiU crawled so that the Switch and Switch 2 could sprint.
