For everyone here who was going insane over the haka in Parliament today, the incredible Tusiata Avia has gifted us (especially our rangatahi wahine) a poem about the event. More poets, more artists, rise up and build on this! #NZPolitics #NZPoetry #NZPol

Driven to total silliness by a month of packing and posting 1500 books sold in the August sale, the THWUP team are shown here cowering together in a stairwell with various volumes of Selected Poems on their heads. Buy some Selected Poems! Half price!

I am a big fan of Serie Barford - the person and the poet - and have just ordered her latest collection, 'Standing on my Shadow'. For an illuminating and heart-expanding experience, listen to Emile Donovan's interview with Serie recently:

I accidentally started my day with a headline
Consult insult assault too much salt
Look at a leaf, veins spreading feeding from a star love into earth
Look at a leaf, smooth edges crinkled edges delicate edges long edges
Look at a leaf, green, green, green, brown, orange, purple, red

Got new stuff coming very soon, but thought I'd reshare this #poem of mine from 2022 here, as I'm trying to bring all my writing across. This was published in issue 13 of #nzpoetry journal Minarets (which I was fortunate enough to edit issue 14 of!) - it's old but I still have a soft-spot for it

I so admire short, unfussy poems, especially when they're a bit psychic.

I wasn't actually thinking of the end of America when I wrote this, but words always go where they need to

.

My Final Poem

Someone rides a bicycle through a cemetery,
then in and out of my poem.
Why would anyone do that?

I was expecting a dark horseman,
not a clown on a bicycle.

Pouring over land rooting expences
Isolating relitigating discarded tree scraps
Forestry scarfing whole communities

Death to life water water water thudding
Away in the bank balance officials backslaps
Tumbling hillsides sliding impunities

Excerpts from a fresh WIP, tentatively titled “Wellington Temporality, and Maybe, a Goddamn Break”.

Living in Ōtautahi now, but the Wellingtonian identity is one hell of a drug. Withdrawals and all.
