“Illcord Natoth has bioweapons?” That was like something out of an old morality play the Grass Priests might put on to scare us submissive. “Those are against the laws of gods and man!” His words dripped bitterness. “Maybe someone forgot to tell the krov.” Despite myself, I shivered. “Stars. That is bad.” “Yeah. At least when Starfire was alive, the attacks were targeted. She might have been a genocidal bitch, but she didn’t mutate planets. Or attack civilian settlements.” The stations on Neskey moon hadn’t been civilian settlements exactly, but— “Except she did, a few times,” I pointed out. “Like at Nesky and NewLaramie. And Centauri.” His face hardened. “Thanks for the reminder.” A glint at his neck caught my eye; he had a circular patch of membrane on his breast bone, a little too light to be flesh. A feeding shunt there, pilot’s kiss, just like mine. How many jumps does a military pilot do? Sometimes dozens in a day. Even intandem they burn out quickly, and Rathe didn’t look green. His time had to be running low. The pearls around my neck hid my own port. I fingered them self-consciously and wondered if he knew I had one. Having a kiss wasn’t a sign of weakness—if anything, the opposite—but it was a warning, and one I hadn’t earned. “This war has exacted a cruel toll,” Mureen sighed. “Upon all of us... "

I had a friend who worked as bar staff at the Elephant & Castle downstairs in the downtown mall who liked to point out the corner where he claimed that Rick Bell frequently "fell asleep" in his bar stool.

“Sometimes the navvies die before we can get them out,” Kublich said. “We’ve a limited window to save the wire if the pilot goes first—” and then he asked if she wouldn’t mind helping with more surgeries. “Assuming extracting Starfire’s navvy doesn’t kill you.” She’d agreed. Behind the doctor, black-bordered portraits lined the wall. After Centauri, every ship in the Fleet was full of black-bordered portraits—for when Starfire took out the Aemercy war machine, she’d taken thousands of their own, too. After Polla’s, Starfire’s navicomputer was easy. It slipped out squirming and was immediately whisked away by Elder Tiff with a stern command to Mureen not to brag to her own Circle. Starfire’s body was returned to its blood tank, and the tremors shaking their ship stopped. In the Fringer parlance Mureen was fast picking up from Polla’s maternal progenitor, the once-mighty Ledas Starfire no possessed a soul. “Why keep it?” Mureen asked Ells the next day at lunch. “Lee’s symbiote?” He nearly spit out his caffeinate. “Stars, don’t ask that! We’re not keeping it. Did someone say we were?” And then her unflappable mentor glanced around the cafeteria, to make sure no one had heard. But Mureen had meant Starfire’s body, which stubbornly kept breathing, even without most of its brain. She clarified. “Ah.” His dimples flashed. “Admiral Vadim wants a public execution on Earth.” They’d taken to eating in the pilots’ mess, not with other Ken’ri, so it was safe to speak openly, but he still lowered his voice. “Aren’t you a little curious about the symbiote?” Mureen could do a fair imitation of Tiff. “Oh heavens, no!” Ells beamed. “Good girl.” From what Mureen had studied of history (everything she could get her hands on), Glos and the reclusive Pilot Guild had been ever at odds. Yet she’d seen the black coven ship dock in an Ascendant hangar after Starfire’s capture, seen visored witches in the medical bay whispering with both Kublich and Tiff. She’d watched the ship’s pale-haired … Removing two navvies had taught Mureen a great deal, but she had to know more. She’d always wanted more. What was it about these machines, designed to fold space and time, that amplified kamn? Ken’ri of Glos were forbidden from becoming pilots. Starfire and her husband Natoth had broken every rule—but no one, not even Ells, had ever said why. Every Ken’ri knew the punishment for those who broke with Glos. Every Kamen acolyte did their service in the catacombs, saw those transgressors, heard their broken screams. In the weeks that followed, as Polla Ottrava healed, Mureen’s hands often closed over the inert cube in her pocket. Navvies were machines, and one thing Mureen had learned was that machines broke all the time. Machines could be fixed. According to hallway gossip, Admiral Vadim was now seeking what everyone had started to call the real prize: Nuala Erta. Mureen had first heard of Nuala Erta in her mother’s lullabies, for the Aemercy prophets had sought it too. “Was the planet the true source of Starfire’s power?” she asked Ells. For so one rumor went. “Nuala Erta’s not a planet,” he snapped. And then, much to her surprise, her mentor explained what it was. “Do you understand why it’s dangerous?” he asked. She knew better than to lie. “But we could do so much—” Ells waved her off. “Really? Read your stolen books and ask more pilots about science. Have a chat with Davad Arkan—if they ever let him wake.” A few days later, Mureen found the sleepwalking Polla in the room with the blood pools, staring at Starfire’s empty body. The body still screamed from time to time, even if walls no longer shook. Next to his sister’s shell, Ken’ri Davad Arkan dreamed like a scalded prince in a child’s tale. (The ship, Ells opined, had tried to save Lee, and dissolve Davad’s flesh, he posited—only to be halted by the similarity of shared heritage.)
