A study in Discover Nano outlines research strategies to advance green-synthesized nanoparticles toward scalable and regulation-ready nanotechnology platforms. 🌍🧪
Current advancements and future research directions in the green synthesis and applications of nanoparticles - Discover Nano
The rapid expansion of research on green-synthesized nanoparticles (GSNPs), particularly those produced through biological processes, has generated a highly fragmented literature that obscures structural trends and translational gaps. This study conducts a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of publications indexed in Scopus between 2020 and 2025 to map the intellectual landscape of GSNPs and identify priority directions for future research. The findings demonstrate that silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) dominate the field, driven by their established antibacterial effectiveness and broad biomedical and environmental utility. At the same time, plant extracts remain the primary biosynthetic resources, while alternative biological sources, including bacteria and fungi, are still inadequately investigated. The analysis also highlights the limited use of high-resolution characterization tools, including field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), compared to the prevalent conventional techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), revealing a persistent characterization gap at the nano–bio interface. The geographic analysis highlights Asia, especially India and China, as leading contributors, supported by dense international collaboration networks. Conceptually, the study clarifies green synthesis within the 12 principles of green chemistry, integrating biological, physical, and chemical methods and proposing a taxonomy that resolves the frequent conflation of green synthesis with biosynthesis alone. Finally, by linking bibliometric patterns to toxicity and regulatory keywords, the analysis exposes key barriers to commercialization. It outlines research strategies to advance GSNPs toward scalable and regulation-ready nanotechnology platforms. Graphical abstract

Capillary Electrophoresis Methods for the Characterization of Synthetic Nanoparticles
Capillary electrophoresis (CE) can be applied to evaluate nanoparticle (NP) size, charge, and surface characteristics. Hyphenating CE with ICP-MS and AF4 can provide comprehensive, multidimensional NP characterization. ABSTRACT Nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit properties distinct from bulk materials of identical chemical composition, with their behavior and functionality intrinsically linked to parameters such as size, composition, surface functionality, and (surface) charge. Accurate characterization of these parameters is therefore essential for understanding and optimizing NP performance in a variety of applications, including coatings, cosmetics, sunscreens, drug delivery systems, and vaccines. Conventional analytical techniques for NP characterization include microscopy-, scattering-, field-flow fractionation-, and chromatography-based methods, which are mainly employed for size determination. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy provide ensemble information on chemical composition, while mass spectrometry of NPs larger than 10 nm remains challenging. Among more established techniques, capillary electrophoresis (CE) represents an interesting alternative for NP characterization, due to its inherent selectivity toward size, charge, and surface properties. In this review, literature from the past seven years is surveyed to outline and discuss CE-based approaches for NP analysis. It is demonstrated that, through appropriate calibration or use of theoretical models, CE can provide size information, (surface) charge, and zeta (ζ) potential. In addition, CE can be applied to assess NP stability, composition, and interactions with, for example, ligands. Importantly, owing to its separation capability, CE can reveal physicochemical heterogeneity within NP populations, rather than only ensemble-averaged values. Furthermore, the coupling of CE with complementary separation or detection techniques, particularly asymmetric-flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) and single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS), offers comprehensive analytical platforms providing orthogonal information on NP size, composition, and charge simultaneously.

MIT scientists break a 20-year rule and unlock never-before-seen crystal structures
Instead of relying on rigid molecular connections to hold nanoparticles in carefully planned arrangements, the team developed extremely flexible connectors that bend and adjust as particles come together. This unexpected strategy gives scientists a new way to control how nanoparticles organize themselves, allowing them to create crystal structures that have never been observed before. The discovery could help overcome a major obstacle in materials science and open new possibilities for creating substances with precisely engineered properties. Potential applications include electronics, medicine, energy technologies, agriculture, and chemical manufacturing. The findings, described in a paper that will appear in Nature Materials, demonstrate how the flexibility and electrical charges of molecular connectors can determine the structures that nanoparticles form. MIT Researchers Challenge 20 Years of Materials Science "People are interested in nanoparticle superlattices because of the promise of building designer materials where you have more say in what types of structures they can actually build into," says Rob Macfarlane, the Richard P. Simmons (1953) Professor in Metallurgy in MIT's Department of Materials Science and Engineering. "This is a new approach in nanoparticle assembly that hasn't been investigated before. It's exciting to have a new tool that is so counterintuitive. It's the exact opposite...
