Church of St Mary the Virgin, #Radwinter. #Essex

The lower stage of a 14th Century south porch. In 1869-70, W. E. Nesfield, architect, added the gabled framed upper storey.

Wonderful carving to massive timbers of the lower stage.

Impossible to miss the six stone circles atop the peat-rich wilds of Machrie Moor, but what lies buried beneath? Yesterday archaeologists revealed that a seventh circle lies under the surface. Under the surface: that dark and secret place where all that is wyrd smoulders ...

Bought a painting to cheer myself up.

Not terribly fashionable but I like it. It's by William Andrews Nesfield, a generally forgotten, but at the time important, landscape architect and before that a painter (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William...), who happens to be my great-great-great-great uncle.

This reminded me of the very cool “Of the Oak” art installation at Kew Gardens — which is based on imaging of a rare oak hybrid that was developed to be drought-resistant — if you see how dry Kew is this year, seems important!

But this is the story of the guy who made the hybrid, and his hubris

Title page from my copy of “Specimens of Mediaeval Architecture..” by English architect William Eden Nesfield published in 1862. The title page art with an allegory of architecture is decidedly not by a medieval artist; it’s by Albert Joseph Moore, who was part of the British Aesthetic Movement.

A fascinating evening at The #GardenMuseum last night at the 'launch' of the WA #Nesfield #Archive. Great to see the range of materials that will soon be available for #research on this great high #Victorian designer and #artist.

I'll be OK, I think. Thanks.

Manningham Lane, corner of Nesfield Street. I was filtering in the cycle lane. Driver turned right across my path into Nesfield Street. No space to stop. Hit his wing and ended up sprawled on his bonnet.

William Andrews Nesfield ‘dominated the Victorian horticultural scene for decades’, but is all but forgotten today. The Garden Museum’s acquisition of his enormous archive should change this state of affairs, writes Timothy Brittain-Catlin
