🎓 I finished my PhD at KU Leuven in the Neuropathology Lab, where I studied the link between Alzheimer's disease 🧠 and the eye 👁️. Now looking for a postdoc position to continue exploring neurodegeneration.

Yet more evidence that repeated COVID infection does very serious, cumulative damage to the human cardiopulmonary, circulatory, and neurological systems, and that everyone everywhere that COVID has ever been detected needs access to easy, recurrent EKG's, EEG's, and CT scans, for free, for Ever.

🧠 How COVID-19 impacts the brain

Researchers found that blood clots linked to COVID-19 can cause inflammation and brain damage.

A new antibody treatment targeting these clots could help reduce long-term effects seen in long COVID.

mTORC1 drives cell-autonomous astrocyte reactivity in tuberous sclerosis - Nature
Reactive astrocytes emerge as a primary consequence of TSC2 loss in tuberous sclerosis complex, implicating glial dysfunction as a primary driver of pathogenesis and highlighting the astrocytes as potential therapeutic targets for tuberous sclerosis complex-related neuropathology.

The weight of the evidence shows the existence of a dose-response relationship btw collision sports and longterm neuropathology (i.e., the more & longer you play, the higher the risks).

(Also, there are now multiple studies correcting for the selection bias of brain donation, so that's no response)
“All but one of the former professional players — 27 of 28 in total, and 18 of 19 who played in the National Hockey League — showed signs of CTE…Of the donors whose hockey careers were limited to youth or high school hockey, researchers found CTE in only 10% of samples.” cc @profgoldberg.bsky.social
Longer careers in ice hockey are linked to a greater risk of CTE, a new study finds
A new Boston University study of 77 deceased male ice hockey players found that their chances of developing the degenerative brain disease known as CTE increased with each year they played the sport.
