While Solm’s unique combo of skills & experience is apparent & valuable, one gets the distinct sense in reading this that he seems to lack any extensive direct care experience with those in the throes of organic psychosis.
What if Freud Was Right?
A neuroscientist dares to argue that old-fashioned psychoanalysis holds the key to curing mental illness.

Mostly it's great. The inclusion of 56 previously unincluded papers, esp the long lost metapsychology one, is fab. The new glossary is top notch. But I'm a staunch opponent of Solms' neuropsychoanalysis that is the lens for his new editor's commentaries. And all the underlining is real eyesore.

It’s a fitting end for a class that has largely constituted a dogmatic intro to Solms’s reading of Freud rather than a class that approaches neuropsychoanalysis as a project that raises questions & posits hypotheses about the philosophy of mind or the nature of therapeutic action

We’re reading portions of Mark Solms’s new book The Only Cure for our final class on neuropsychoanalysis this week. Curious to see how it compares to the other works by Solms I’ve already read that primarily address a popular and non-scientific audience, like The Hidden Spring!

This is a pretty interesting paper that was assigned for my neuropsychoanalysis class. The author, who happens to be the son of Bruno Bettelheim, argues that the recent notion of “enactment” lacks conceptual clarity but that modern affective neuroscience can offer a corrective.

Reading about empathy this morning for my neuropsychoanalysis class

The Basch article is an interesting little relic in the turn to affect theory in American psychoanalysis and self psychology since it was produced before Panksepp and Damasio’s theory became hegemonic and draws upon Tomkins instead

Two more readings for my neuropsychoanalysis class which has me wondering once again about the way that Heidegger is being interpreted and deployed by cognitive scientists and linguists in order to discuss embodiment.
