A paper in Nature Neuroscience presents a new device capable of translating speech activity in the brain into spoken words in real-time. This technology could help people with speech loss to regain their ability to communicate more fluently in real time. 🧪

This is a pattern. I've met a lot of people in the neuroprosthesis world who don't care that much about disabled people, but do care a lot about consumer tech
For @motherjones.com, I looked into how Meta could be using disabled people to promote its Meta glasses to the masses. As one expert told me, “companies have used accessibility...as a Trojan horse for a tool that poses significant privacy and security threats.” www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
Is Meta using disabled people to promote its glasses?
AI glasses are a double-edged sword for disabled people, who face unique risks from surveillance.

This Nature Neuroscience article, pub'd today, reminds me of fNIRS work we did a decade ago as follow-on to what UT-Dallas' PR coined "hairbrush that reads your mind" as well our later DARPA-funded all-optical nascent neuronal sensor/stimulator tech. Fun times. Great science & engineering. 🧪

Since 2019, we have been developing the world’s most advanced “neuroprosthesis”—an artificial upper arm and hand that is controlled by the user’s thoughts.

Now, the project is reaching a new milestone—the technology behind the LUKE Arm is ready to be tested outside the lab.

Optogenetic stimulation in visual cortex evokes modality-specific percepts; projection-specific optogenetic stimulation of visual vortex for neuroprosthesis (I'm one of those noninvasive guys, but find this very interesting work)
Hugely outmanned by non-invasive methods people, I still managed to have a couple of inquisitive conversations here at #BrainStimConf and find the most interesting computation person in my life. Not too ashamed of my poster anymore:
